
Douglas Murphy KC
Murphy Mediation was established in July 2023 by its Principal, Doug Murphy KC, who had practised as a barrister in Brisbane and elsewhere in Australia from July 1980 until June 2023.
He now practises full-time as a mediator for all types of commercial disputes (including partnerships, property, family property, and contracts) as well as disputes involving deceased estates and trusts.

During his long practice as a barrister Doug accumulated a wealth of experience in commercial, property, equity, trusts, wills, and estate law. He took Silk in 2006.
He was a member of the Queensland Bar Council for 18 years and within that time served as Honorary Secretary for four years, and Honorary Treasurer for another four. He was part of the Queensland Bar’s ADR Committee from its inception until 2022 and promoted professional development by engaging world-renowned speakers from home and abroad for mediators’ conferences. He also chaired the Succession and Elder Law Committee until 2021.
He has mediated cases, litigated and otherwise, since the mid 1990’s. He became accredited under the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS) at that system’s inception in 2008 and he has been re-accredited ever since. He is also accredited under the Farm Business Debt Mediation Act 2017 (Qld). He is presently a member of Resolution Institute.
Doug undertook extensive training in mediation – initially at the Centre for Dispute Resolution at Bond University, also at the Strauss Institute at Pepperdine University in California and at the American Institute of Mediation, in Los Angeles. Doug has continuously increased his practice as a mediator and enhanced his reputation as an expert in the commercial mediation field having been recognized as such in Who’s Who Legal.
In 2013, Doug was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators (aimed.org) in Toronto and in 2021 he became the first Australian to be elected to the IAM Board of Governors.
From 2015 until 2022 he was a member and director of the Mediator Standards Board that governed the Australian national accreditation standards system (NMAS).
Doug was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Queensland Bar Association in November 2019 for his many years of voluntary efforts in continuing professional education and service to the profession.
